Yes, I’m back to blogging..............Just thot it would be easier to start with a movie review
And what better than the advent of last and most anticipated quarter of bollywood on which almost 700 crores are riding.
This weekend saw the release of two movies, Wake up SID! And Do Knot Disturb with Ranbir kapoor and Govinda as the leads in the movies respectively.
I trusted Nikita Kazmi’s 4 star rating for the Ranbir kapoor starrer and decided to watch that first.
Director Ayan Mukerji’s debut venture starring Ranbir kapoor and Konkona Sen in the lead role proves to be a disappointment for me as well as to the hype it created (of course along with the hype created by KJo and Mr. Raj Thackrey). I’m sorry to say but it somehow underperforms in areas it had the potential to.
As usual the story first. Sidharth (Ranbir kapoor) is a son of Ram Mehra (Anupam Kher), a rich industrialist and Savita Mehra (Supriya Pathak).Sid (As everyone calls him) is like any other rich brat. He bunks college classes, goes for unlimited shopping, late night disc parties and is least interested in his studies. He wakes up late (obviously), keeps playing video games and doesn’t want his parents to interfere in his life. So when he strikes a deal with his dad to come to his office for 30 days in return for a brand new Porsche, all he ends up doing is chatting and mailing his new friend Aisha(Konkona Sen), who he meets outside his farewell party when he is on his photography spree. Aisha has come from Kolkata to Mumbai (the movie uses the word Bombay but I fear Mr. Thackrey fr obvious reasons) to become independent. She applies to Mumbai beat (a Magazine) for the post of Assistant to the editor in the hope of becoming a writer one day. Meanwhile Sid decides to leave his dad’s office to help Aisha help set her new home. Sid fails in his final exams and as a result of an argument with his dad has to leave his home with no money. He decides to stay with Aisha. Aisha, who is very sporty at first, slowly starts getting irritated coz of messy Sid. She decides to find him a job and is able to get him as an intern of Photography at Mumbai beat, which is by the way led by Rahul khanna, who tries to win the heart of Aisha by taking her to Jazz music. Sid starts working hard, becomes responsible but still unable to realize that Aisha has fallen in love with him. He works things out with his Dad and moves back to his house . But what then???
Now the analysis. The most stress in this movie has been given to Ranbir Kapoor’s T shirts, some of which are too cool. He changes too many T shirts in the movie and still manages to repeat some of them. Ranbir Kapoor looks good as Sid, the rich, casual arrogant type similar to the role he played in BAH. Konkona Sen looks off the track, tying too hard to do commercial cinema and ending up losing her magic touch. She needed to do much better. Rest of the characters get too li’l screen time to show talent .That’s a big problem in this too clichéd storyline which actually has some highs. Rahul khanna promises but is taken off the screen as soon as people start liking him. As a debutant director Ayan Mukerji does a fair job. Nothing outstanding as you would imagine for KJo to have found. He is not able to carry the highs of the movie for too long to enjoy. Music seems good, as it has already proved in the charts. Some of the background tracks are un-necessary and irritating. Cinematography is excellent at some points and useless sometimes, making you wonder “what r they trying to show”. the depiction of the characters is obvious right from Supriya Pathak, trying to impress her son with her tooti footi English, to, Anupam Kher trying to get his son on right path, to Rahul Khanna trying to impress his assistant and finally to sleeping SID who, guess what Finally WAKES UP making us sleep.
My Take- Watch it if you like Ranbir kapoor or wanna watch some nice T-shirts. I still would’ve preferred Govinda’s comedy instead.
